When she died on 15 July 1851, Mother Javouhey left 1000 Sisters of Saint Joseph of Cluny who had settled on the five continents after long and perilous journeys on the sailing ships of their day. These young Sisters carried out a variety of apostolates – education, nursing, and pastoral work, especially in favour of the underprivileged.
The
congregation, which the Foundress said was the "Work of God"
and not hers, continued to expand and diversify. More and more
it welcomed sisters of different origins, took root in new
countries, at the foot of the Himalayas in India and in the Andes
cordillera in Peru, in the sands of Niger and the Andamans
The missionary thrust sensed and launched by Mother Javouhey has never ceased to attract and inspire her Sisters.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny are present today in more than 50 countries. They belong to some 70 nations or regions of the world, more than a third are Indian, almost one-fifth are African or Malgache. With a great diversity of languages, cultures and education, with a broad sweep of apostolic activities which continue to evolve according to the needs of the times, the unity of the Congregation is maintained by the desire of each Sister to follow Christ according to the spirit of the Foundress.
